LA CALLE MAÑUETA

There was once a bathhouse on Mañueta Street, and its Basque name, Bañuela, evolved into Mañueta. It’s a truly traditional street that boasted a pelota court (located where the current one stands, but larger) which operated from 1911 to 1954 and was famous for the most outlandish bets placed by its players: substituting points on their knees, playing with a bench tied to their back, with a dog under their arm, with a watermelon on their shoulder, two or three players tied by the ankle, and even dressed as villagers in hoods.
